For 4.5 thousand years these giant blocks of Gneiss have stood in a field by the village of Callanish on the Isle of Lewis. Local tradition says that giants who lived on the island refused to be converted to Christianity by Saint Kieran and were turned into stone as a punishment. It’s a mysterious and mystical place - the more so in the late afternoon light beneath brooding skies.
